#15 International Emoji Day

Smiley Cushion

Today is ‘International emoji-day’ and because we spend a lot of time using them on our socials on Facebook en Instagram (with you guys! Hi!) we couldn’t let this day go by.. So, let’s celebrate with a free pattern of a classic emoji: the smiley! Isn’t it a cutie? Instant happiness right? Yup, that’s what we thought! So grab your crochet hook because there is always room in your house (and let’s be honest: in your heart) for this happy camper.

Shopping list:
- 3 x Super Must-Have 015 Mustard
- 1 Must-Have Mini 100 Black
- Crochet hook 4,5 mm and 3 mm
- Stitch marker
- Measuring tape
- Yarn and Colors tapestry needle
- Yarn and Colors Inner cushion 12 inch diameter

Used stitches:
mr = magic ring
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch

Good to know: This cushion is made with single crochets in the round without closing each round. It can be useful to mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker, so you don’t have to count!

Pattern
Start with crochet hook size 4,5 mm and Super Must-Have 015 Mustard.
Round 1: Make 6 sc in a magic ring (or chain 4 and close with a slip stitch to form a ring).
Round 2: Crochet 2 sc in each stitch around (12 st total).
Round 3: Crochet 1 sc, 2 sc in next stitch and repeat until the end of the round (18 st total).
Round 4: Crochet 2 sc in next stitch, 2 sc, repeat (24 st total).
Round 5: Crochet 3 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat (30 st total).
Round 6: Crochet 1 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, *4 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*, repeat * * around and end with 3 sc (36 st total)
Round 7: Crochet 5 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat (42 st total).
Round 8: Crochet 2 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, *6 sc, 2 sc in next stitch* around and end with 4 sc (48 st total).
Round 9: Crochet 7 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat (54 st total).
Round 10: Crochet 3 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, *8 sc, 2 sc in next stitch* repeat and end with 5 sc (60 st total).
Round 11: Crochet 9 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat (66 st total).
Round 12: Crochet 4 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, *10 sc, 2 sc in next stitch* repeat and end with 6 sc (72 st total).

Continue to build up your crochet project. You increase by 6 stitches in each round, but you alternate the placement of the increases each time (in one round you crochet all single crochets first and the increases afterward, in the other round you crochet a few single crochets first, increase and end in the remaining single crochets). Alternating the increases will make your cushion nice and round and the increases less visible.

Crochet along until your crochet project has a diameter of 12 inch.
Create the second part similarly.

Use crochet hook 3 mm and Must-Have 100 Black and start slip stitching exactly between round 17 and 18 to form the mouth. Simply follow the line of the rounds. Embroider the arrows on top of the mouth.

Embroider the eyes with two strands from bottom - between round 6 and 7 -, to top -between round 17 and 18-.

Put the two parts together, with the wrong sides facing each other and crochet or sew them together. Insert the inner cushion and close up the cushion. Weave in the ends.

Voila, your cushion is done! Smile the day away!

If you can’t get enough of this happy fella feel free to make your own version. What do you think of the heart eyes emoji? Or the winking one? Or the one with that cute blush on it’s cheeks? We see a lot of possibilities…

Will you share your smiley/emoji with us on the socials? We are super curious to see your version!
