#16 Ombré Granny Square Phonebag

Ombré Granny Square Phonebag

Have you seen the ‘granny square’ trend? We’re big fans! To capture the summery feeling, I made a square with a lovely ombre color gradient.

You can make a small phone-bag from just four squares in which you can take your phone everywhere you go. Let’s be honest, there often are no pockets in those nice summer dresses..

And the best? We share both the granny square pattern and the description of how to crochet the bag for free (!) with you in this blog. So grab your crochet hook, make the most beautiful ombré color combinations or choose one that we put together and get started. Let that Indian Summer last forever!

Stitches and abbreviations (US terms):
mr    = magic ring
sl st  = slip stitch
sc     = single crochet
dc     = double crochet
fpdc  = front post double crochet
bob   = bobble stitch
sts     = stitches

How to make a bobble stitch?
*yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and pull up loop, (yarn over and draw through two loops; rep from * two more times, yarn over and draw through all four loops.

Good to know:
-  The square is worked in the round closing the round with a sl st.
-  Crochet between * * and between [ ] the number of times that is indicated.
-  Start every new round with 3 chain stitches to make height. Count this as 1 dc. Close the round with a sl st in the 3rd ch. This is not mentioned in the pattern for the sake of readability.
-  Always attach your new yarn in a different place in the square. This makes weaving in ends a little easier.
-  When you notice that the square is pulling a lot on the corners, feel free to add another chain between the clusters of 3 dc.
-  The size of a (blocked) square is 10 x 10 cm.
-  The size of the phone bag is 11 x 22 cm.
-  To achieve the ombre effect in the squares, they are crocheted according to the color scheme below:
Color 1 = for all squares 102 Marble
Color 2 = 107 Ocher, 115 Wisteria, 110 Caramel, 044 Light Pink
Color 3 = 108 Curry, 052 Orchid, 023 Brick, 042 Peach
Color 4 = 018 Bronze, 051 Plum, 024 Chestnut, 039 Salmon
Color 5 = 109 Rust, 055 Lilac, 025 Brownie, 040 Pink Sand

Now that you have collected everything and know what you need to know, we can get started.

Let's do it! You can follow the text with the photos, but you can also choose to use the crochet diagram. We’ve taken care of both.

Pattern
Make a mr using color 1 and size 2.5 mm crochet hook.
Round 1: Using color 1, dc 12 in the ring (12 sts total).
Round 2: Join color 2 between 2 dcs of round 1 and *bob 1, ch 1* x 12 (24 sts total)

Round 3: Join color 3 between 2 bob sts of round 2 (in ch-space over ch1). *dc 3, ch 1, dc 3, [1fpdc around bob st of round 2] x3, and between 2 bob sts of the previous round * x 4 (40 sts total).

Pull the bobbles from round 2 forward with your fingers so that they actually start to 'bobble'.

Round 4: Join color 4 in one of the corners (in ch-space over ch1). * dc 3, ch 1, dc 3, skip 3 sts and dc 2 between dc and fpdc of round 3, [2dc between 2 fpdcs] x2, 2 dc between fpdc and dc, skip 3 sts and in ch-space* x4 (60 sts total).

Round 5: Join color 5 in one of the corners (in ch-space over ch1). *dc 3, ch 1, dc 3, ch 1, skip 5 sts and make 1 dc between the cluster of 2 dcs. Make 1 dc in the previous cluster. These two dcs will form a little ‘cross’ in your work. Repeat until you made four crosses. Ch 1, skip 5 sts and in ch-space* x4 (68 sts total).

Round 6: Join color 5 in of the corners (in ch-space over ch1). *dc 3, ch 1, dc 3, skip 3 sts and dc 1 in next ch-space, dc 8, 1dc in next ch-space, skip 3 dcs* x4 (68 sts total).

Make another 3 squares with the other color combinations so you have one each.

Weave in all ends block the squares to a size of 10 x 10 cm.

You are now joining your granny squares. Make 2 duo’s of granny squares in a combination that you like. You’ll firstly join two granny squares.

Place wrong sides of the squares together and join color 1 in the inner loops of the chain stitches on a corner (i.e. 1 loop of one square and 1 loop of the other square) and join with a single crochet.

Continue making scs till the next corner and make a sc in the chain stitches there too (18 sts total).

Repeat for the other two granny squares. Weave in ends.

You are now going to crochet the two duos together and the bag will start to form.

Place wrong sides of the two duos (all 4 squares) together and join color 1 in the inner loops of the chain stitches on the top left corner (i.e. 1 loop from one square and 1 loop from the other square). Make a single crochet.
Only work in one loop of the stitch of each square. For the sake of readability of the pattern, this is no longer specified.
Make a sc in each st to join the 2 squares (17 sts total).
Crochet a sc through the front and back square on the right (see photo) and sc through the front and back square on the left (see photo, 19 tr total).
In each st, sc up to corner (35 dc total).
In the chain stitches of the corner work 3sc (see photo, 38 sts total).
In each st, sc to next corner (54 dc total).
In the chain stitches of the corner work 3sc (57 sts total).
In each st sc until next joining squares (73 sts total).
Crochet another sc through the front and back square on the right and sc through the front and back square on the left (75 sts total).
Finally sc 1 in every st. Don't forget the last sc in ch (92 sts total).
Do not cut your yarn!

Now you are going to make the top edge of your bag.
To do this work an extra sc in the back loop of the ch of the front square (see photo).
Crochet 1 sc in every st. Now work through both loops again! (17 sts total).
When you get to the joined part, make another sc in the back loop of the chain stitch of the front square (see photo) and a sc in the back loop of the back square (19 sts total).
Continue working in the next square, 1 sc in each stitch (through both loops) (35 sts total).
Crochet 1 more sc in back loop of ch at corner (36 sts in total).
Do not close, but continue working in the round:
Round 2: sc 17, ch 2, skip 2 sts, sc 16, ch 2, skip 2 sts.
Round 3: sc 16, sc 2 in ch-space, sc 16, sc 2 in ch-space, sc 1.
Cut your yarn and weave in ends.

Now you are going to make the cord of your phone bag.
Cut 3 strands of 3 meters long from color 1.
Choose two more shades that you like from your square. Cut from these two shades 4 strands of also 3 meters long.
You now have 3 bundles of strands. Two in a shade of one of your squares and one in color 1.
Take all the bundles together and tie a knot in the end.
Now braid the strands into a cord and tie a knot in the end again.
Pass the cord through the openings of the top edge of your bag and tie a tight knot with both ends.
Wear the cords cross body. Adjust which length is right for you (with the phone in the bag for the weight) and adjust if desired.

You are all set to go out with your new handmade bag. Will it be an evening walk? Are you partying at a festival?
Or are you going for a stroll in the city? Whatever you do, don't forget to share the result of your bag with us.
We are very curious to see yours! Tag us on the socials!
